This week, I saw a video of construction workers taking a hands-on approach to worksite safety. The project is a big one—development of a brand-new soccer stadium in St. Louis, MO. The project is estimated to cost $460 million, and the stadium will offer 22,500 seats once completed. As you can observe in the video, the workers are taking part in a morning exercise routine to warm up for the day’s work. The entire crew takes part, even management, to prevent on-the-job injuries, improve morale, and encourage a positive mental state.
This week is Construction Safety Week, and I would like to share a message regarding safety. Constructionsafetyweek.com covers a different aspect of workplace safety every day, and today’s theme is: Be Relentless. According to their website, “Preventing injuries means relentlessly paying attention to risk. Using mind and body to always make safety number one. Executing the fundamentals is critically important. It starts by wearing full PPE 100 percent of the time. It means going back to the basics by learning and embracing hand safety techniques. These practices and many more like wearing seatbelts, learning first aid and always being tied off saves lives and makes our industry safer every day. Mental discipline is a critical element of total wellbeing.”
For those that are curious, Thursday’s theme is: Be Safe, Be Well Rested. Friday’s theme is dedicated to thanking those in the industry for their hard work, especially as they faced unprecedented challenges during this past year.
The Associated General Contractors of America (AGC) is running a brief survey of highway and transportation members involved in highway construction work to assess the state of work zone safety. The results will inform a media and public education campaign that will be launched later this month. If you are able to, check out the survey here: www.surveymonkey.com/r/G9QGDVT
