The Virtues of Goofing Off

A few days ago, I had virtually locked myself in my office, trying to get work finished ahead of the holiday weekend. I had not left the room for hours. My demeanor was intense, serious, and stressed. When I finally did emerge for a coffee run to the kitchen, my daughter, Lulu, lovingly greeted me as she always does, to which I responded with a terse, “Mm-hmm.”

I returned to my office with a fresh cup of coffee and an unchanged demeanor. Minutes later, my cell phone dinged with a text alert. I let out an annoyed sigh because I had to stop what I was doing and check to see what the text was about. It was from my daughter. She had sent me a video. This video.

It made me smile. And I hope that it just made you smile. She reminded me that in everything we do, no matter how serious it is, there is almost always some fun to be found. I have always preached to my kids to work hard and play hard, and when you can, play hard at work.

So, with that spirit of silliness, I returned to work this week—as I know you have as welland urge you not to take it all so seriously.

Thank you, Lulu-bird!
