Both Caterpillar and Terex have recently improved their motorized scrapers to boost productivity and lower operating costs. Today’s Cat 627G and 637G tandem-powered machines have new electronically controlled scraper engines with dual-power capabilities, just as the tractor engines do.The 621G, 627G, 631G, and 637G all have a new operator’s station, a redesigned bowl with 10% more capacity, and the latest electronic monitoring system to simplify maintenance. The 627G and 637G now use the Cat C-9 scraper engine with dual horsepower capabilities. Dual horsepower enables the machine to produce more power in higher gear ranges for faster cycle times. The 621G standard scraper and the 627G tandem-powered scraper both use the Cat 3408E engine, which produces 330 net horsepower in lower gears and 365 horsepower in higher gears. The C-9 scraper engine on the 627G produces 225 horsepower and 249 horsepower. Heaped bowl capacity is 22 cubic yards. Both the 631G standard scraper and the 637G tandem-powered scraper use the Cat 3408E tractor engine. The engine produces 450 net horsepower in lower gears and 485 horsepower in higher gears. The C-9 scraper engine pumps out 249 horsepower and 274 horsepower. Heaped bowl capacity is 34 cubic yards. The electronically controlled engines feature the Caterpillar HEUI fuel system. HEUI stands for hydraulic electronic unit injector (hydraulically actuated injectors). Each engine is electronically integrated with an automatic planetary powershift transmission to provide maximum power to the cutting edge and high-production haul road speed. On these improved scrapers, Caterpillar retained the single-lever implement control, which combines three traditional levers—bowl, apron, and ejector—into one joystick. The operator can raise and lower the bowl and actuate the apron and ejector with the single joystick. On appropriate models, a trigger on the joystick controls the auger or the bail. The transmission hold and cushion hitch switches are incorporated into the joystick as well.Terex offers two models of scrapers, the 340-horsepower TS14G motor scraper and the 300-horsepower S17E elevating scraper. The TS14G, with a heaped capacity of 20 cubic yards, now has a power-down apron for positive closing and precision ejection. The machine features a seven-speed electronically controlled transmission with a sequential bump shift for smooth-effort changes. The bowl is cushioned for greater stability.Terex’ S17E has an electronically managed engine for increased power and torque, an eight-speed electronically controlled transmission with sequential bump shift, and a panoramic cab for visibility and comfort. A two-speed, reversible elevator has a general earthmoving mode and a finish mode for increased versatility.
