New Cat® 140 Motor Grader Features Conventional Controls, All-Wheel-Drive Option, Grade Control Choices, Operator Amenities
Designed as a high-production model, the all-new Cat® 140 Motor Grader combines a selection of grade control technologies with conventional steering wheel/lever controls, an efficient powertrain, enhanced operator comfort/convenience features, and simple, extended-interval serviceability. The new model offers an all-wheel-drive system option with a standard operating weight of 42,325 pounds (19 198 kg) and features a 12-foot moldboard, a fuel-efficient Cat C9.3 engine—rated at 250 standard net horsepower (186 kW), an 8F/6R direct-drive power-shift transmission, and the Cat Product Link™ telematics system.
Scalable Cat GRADE technologies provide grade control options for customers with different application requirements and budgets—but all aimed at allowing operators to work faster and more accurately for increased productivity. In addition, the optional Stable Blade system automatically slows the machine if the grade will be adversely affected by machine bounce.
- Cat GRADE with Cross Slope is an integrated system that automates blade cross slope, allowing material savings of up to 40 percent in some applications, as estimated by Caterpillar studies comparing this technology with manual blade control
- Cat GRADE with Cross Slope Indicate provides real-time cross-slope information on the machine’s integrated display, resulting in improved grading efficiency without the added expense of automating blade functions
- Digital Blade Slope Meter shows the slope of the blade on the integrated display screen to reduce the need for manual grade checking
- Cat GRADE Attachment-Ready Option (ARO) integrates with Cat GRADE technologies, as well as with other grade-control systems, and ensures machine readiness for additional 2D/3D grade control technologies
Premium features
The Cat C9.3 engine provides optimum power in all gears, with the Variable Horsepower Plus (VHP) system regulating power output between 177-250 horsepower (132-186 kW) for maximum efficiency and fuel economy. When operating in the standard ECO mode, fuel consumption is reduced up to 10 percent in certain applications.
The all-wheel-drive option provides added performance in rough terrain or poor underfoot conditions and the VHP system regulates power output between 176-270 horsepower (131-291 kW). Optimized machine balance ensures maximum drawbar power to the ground.
Optional hydraulic lines accommodate various powered work tools. To expand versatility, there are several attachments available such as the mast-type and mast-less snow wings, plows, straight blades, scarifiers, and the lift group for precise control of front-mounted tools.
Extended maintenance intervals provide significant reductions, saving up to 20 percent in fluid and filter costs. Filters are changed at 1,000 hours, instead of 500, keeping the machine moving and productive. Hydraulic oil, engine air and diesel exhaust fluid (DEF) filters are grouped together in a central location for easy access and preventative maintenance.
Ground level fuel fill keeps operators safe by reducing the need to climb onto the machine. Maximum tightness and accuracy with the top adjust drawbar option saves up to 45 percent in maintenance costs over the standard. The reversing fan option prevents material build up by the rear door intake screen, which helps reduce cleaning maintenance for the motor grader’s cooling system.
Operator environment
Optimum placement of the steering wheel and levers reduce operator effort and strain, promoting a safe, comfortable and productive working environment. The redesigned, ISO-certified ROPS cabin is sound-suppressed and sealed against dust intrusion with a high capacity heating and cooling system to circulate fresh air. An adjustable control console promotes comfort, and the display screen keeps the operator informed about machine functions, while also integrating with Cat Connect Technology information.
Large, floor-to-ceiling windows ensure all-around visibility, which gets a boost from an available rear-view camera system. The Comfort Cab option adds an air-suspension seat, rear wiper, and defrost fans. Halogen lighting is standard, LED optional. In addition, a canopy-type operator’s station is optionally available. For added operator safety, the standard secondary-steering system automatically activates should main-pump pressure drop.
